I managed to get a few things done around the house this weekend, and sadly, that's an accomplishment since I'm normally drowning in my to-do list. Our house is moderately clean, people! I'm so thrilled about this. I also thrifted a coffee table and turned it into an ottoman for our living room, and I succeeded in stapling my thumb with an electric staple gun in the process. Awesome.

I hope you have a very HAPPY WEEKEND, and enjoy these links as much as I did.

My sister, Cate, is a children's photographer in Denver. She came into town a few days after Axel was born to meet him and was able to take some photos of him.

First of all, he has grown so much in the 4.5 months that he as been here. Secondly, these photos are amazing, and I had to hold back tears when I first saw them.

Thank you, Cate!
 A Grandmother's love.
 His protector.*
So much has changed.

* Luis and I both thought that Oskar would be the protective one, but Juniper is without a doubt Axel's guardian. She will sneak into his room at night to sleep on the floor. Go to his crib when he cries. Lay next to him when he is on his playmat. Randomly come up to him throughout the day to give him a good sniff- just makin' sure everything's OK here! It is so sweet. And this photo clarifies that she has been there for him since day one.

I like Bobby Flay quite a bit.

In December of 2010 Luis and I went to Las Vegas with my parents where we had the great privilege of dining at Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill. It was phenomenal, y'all. I mean phenomenal.

If you ever get the chance to go, do it. Don't think about it. Just eat there. For real.

And so began my great respect for the chef that is Bobby Flay.

Fast forward to November of 2011 when I was looking for a pumpkin bread recipe. I stumbled upon Bobby's recipe and, of course, tried it. It's DELICIOUS, so I wanted to pass it along.

Some of my favorite things I stumbled upon this week:

No cost makeover on The Brick House.

+ I want one of these cloud cushions.

+ Let's all leave the baby experts out of our nursery. Axel is actually a pretty good sleeper at night, but his nap times are still pretty unpredictable. I read books, and actually got a lot of great advice from them, but I certainly don't believe that every morsel of information that I read needs to be used, or that it necessarily works for my son. After our trip to Colorado a part of me started to not care so much about all the strategies and bits of advice, which I honestly felt bad about, but after reading this article I've decided to let it go. Sleep when you want, little man, and how you want. Actually, as I type this with one hand, Axel is sleeping in my lap. Not in his crib. In my lap. And I like it.

+ For all of you who think I change my house around too much... I've got nothing on Victoria!

+ A keyboard for happy people.

Have a happy weekend!

A few months ago I made the SHINE sign. It looks pretty awesome at night when the light hits it and it gets all sparkly. You may we wondering why I chose the word shine, and here's why:

Phillipians 2:14-15
Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe.
If you are curious as to how I made it...

I first cut the letters out of foam core with an xacto knife, and then used masking tape to cover the edges. It's pretty hard to get a clean line when cutting through foam core, so the tape acts to smooth out the rough edges. I then used spray adhesive to coat the letters, covered them with Martha Stewart's White Gold glitter, and repeated that process one more time. Just one coat of glitter would work, but there were some spots that didn't cover adequately, so two coats were needed for me. I hung the letters with double sided adhesive strips, and they worked really well.

And it's pretty stinkin' cute!

I've been taking lots of short little videos of him since he was born. 45 seconds here, 30 seconds there. I know that one day I'll cherish looking back and seeing just how much he's changed.

In 2012 I will:

+ Vacuum everyday. I already vacuum a lot, but since Axel will be becoming more mobile soon, I have to vacuum at least once a day. The dog hair is out-of-control here, people. German Shepherds shed like nobodies business 24/7/365, and unfortunately, the battle against the dog hair is one that I am fully aware I will never, ever win. Ever. BUT, with the help of my best friend, the Dyson, it's a battle that isn't quite as difficult as it once was.

+ Go on at least one nice* date a month. What's a movie theatre? What's a coffee shop? I can't seem to remember. Luis and I have a plan for this. I'll disclose the details very soon.

+ Work on the outside of our house. I started painting the exterior before I got pregnant, and then decided it probably wasn't the best idea to climb ladders and inhale paint fumes once I was with child. I also got incredibly discouraged when I realized that every window and crack was patched with GOBS of silicone caulk. You can't paint over silicone caulk. That's why it's used for bathrooms and kitchens. I now have hours and hours of scraping ahead of me. Not exactly me idea of fun! My dad did buy Luis and me a Dremel for Christmas, though. So that should make the job much easier.

+ Enjoy watching my little boy grow and develop into the precious person God designed him to be.

+ Manage our money more efficiently.

+ Be more generous. (See above).

+ Display my love for Luis more often and in more tangible ways. This is something that I have to work harder at now that Axel is here.

What are some of your resolutions?

* Nice does not mean $$$. It means quality time, just the man and me.

My whole family went to Denver for Christmas and so much happened it's hard for me to even get it in one post. My sister, Cate, lives in Denver with her husband, and they had their first baby, Hazel Elizabeth, while we were there.

We loved having a white Christmas with my family, getting to meet Hazel, sledding, swimming, snowball fighting, and eating lots and lots... and lots! On the drive home we stopped in Lindsborg, KS. It's such a cute town and about 6 hours from Dallas.

Axel also experienced a lot of "firsts" while we were there:
+ First plane ride
+ First time meeting his new cousin, Hazel, and his uncle, Matt
+ First Christmas
+ First time in snow
+ First time swimming
+ First road trip

Did you see that there is a store called "Axel's" in Lindsborg?! I don't know why I'm so surprised. Lindsborg is a Swedish town. Axel is named after several relatives on my mom's side of the family, which is 100% Swedish. But still... exciting!!!

I was a part of the Fort Worth Cowtown Indie Bazaar back in October, where Fifi du Vie also had a booth, and I had the great pleasure of snagging a limited edition print of my own. Actually, Luis got it for me, and I love it! Simple and graphic. My style.

Fifi du Vie is "a shop full of limited edition prints, pillow covers & other curiosities." Go take a look! The "Oh darling, let's be adventurers" print has been making it's way around the design blogs recently. It always thrills me when people buy and support handmade!
